A trio of journalists who have a track record of documenting police abuse at political conventions were stopped and searched during the early morning hours in Minneapolis. Police took their video equipment, cell phones, hard drive and notes about protests planned for next week's Republican National Convention. No charges have been filed against the three, according to Mineapolis police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer. Video by Ken Avidor

Sat. Aug 30, 2008. Saint Paul, MN Police Department raids a home at 591 Iglehart Avenue at gunpoint. The journalists include a contributing photojournalist with "Democracy Now", whose host Amy Goodman appears in this clip jumping a fence to question police officers. This is part of a series of police actions on the eve of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. After several hours, all those detained were released. No arrests. No property was seized as result of the search warrant. The clip ends with an interview with homeowner Mike Whalen. At the start of the clip, a neighbor shouts to the media and onlookers that we could all come into her backyard to see the detained people held in the adjacent backyard.

The St. Paul police have engaged in a widespread riot against social justice organizations, resulting in the arrest of over 300 protesters. Even before the Convention began, protesters had the organizing centers raided. Most recently, an antiwar march and several breakaway marches were met with police repression. Even journalists who clearly identified themselves as members of the media, were swept up in the arrests. Take a moment to write a letter demanding that the St. Paul government immediately release all protesters, drop all charges, and halt this outrageous police riot. TAKE ACTION

The body of evidence proving George Bush deliberately lied to Congress and the American people about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction is overwhelming. The Senate and House Intelligence Committees have never held hearings on all the well-placed sources who reported Iraq had no WMD's. To honor the U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians who have died for WMD's that did not exist, we urge immediate hearings.

Growing threat - Join us in mobilizing to Stop War on Iran! As we write, the arrival of new U.S. warships will mark the largest build-up of Naval forces in the Gulf since the 1991 Gulf War. The aircraft carriers USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Ronald Reagan, along with the USS Iwo Jima, an Amphibious Assault Ship are sailing toward the Persian Gulf to reinforce the US strike forces in the region, along with a British Royal Navy carrier battle group and a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine. This move follows the ominous Operation Brimstone, a massive military exercise involving more than a dozen warships from the US, England, and France in the Atlantic Ocean in preparation for a possible confrontation with Iran. CPT 2 August 2008 Twenty-three year-old independent journalist Soran Hama was assassinated last week in Kirkuk, Iraq. Before his death, Soran had written articles critical of Kurdish authorities. (See accompanying release, "IRAQ: Journalist's assassination exposes lack of democracy". Supporters of Soran Hama, democracy and human rights in Iraqi Kurdistan are circulating a letter and asking that international support and pressure be brought to bear upon Kurdish authorities whom they hold responsible for this murder. They are calling for a quick international investigation of this killing in order to find out who is directly responsible and to counter the threat that this assassination poses to free expression and democracy in Iraq and Kurdistan. TAKE ACTION.

This Wednesday, the U.S. Senate will hold hearings on S.3212, a bill aimed at providing independent verification of ballots cast on electronic voting machines. That's a laudable goal, but S.3212 gets it wrong - very wrong. S.3212 would allow electronic "verification" of votes cast on electronic voting machines. If S.3212 becomes law, elections in many states would still depend on the trustworthiness of computer software. This bill also fails to require hand audits of federal election results, and contains other measures that could set back years of progress toward transparent and trustworthy elections. Click here to tell your Senators to oppose S.3212.

Please join PDA, The Council for the National Interest and other groups in a national call-in/email campaign to OPPOSE H.C.R 362 and S. Res. 580, the Blockade of Iran bills, and SUPPORT H.C.R. 321, which calls for a diplomatic initiative with Iraq, Iran, Syria, and neighboring countries as a means of getting out of Iraq and resolving other disputes.

But will they be real hearings, where members of Congress actually honor their duty to protect and defend the Constitution, or just a fly by with action on impeachment itself still expressly off the agenda?

We, the undersigned, condemn Israel’s appalling treatment of Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs Gaza correspondent and author of the magazine’s regular feature, “Gaza on the Ground.” The 24-year-old Palestinian journalist was brutally assaulted by Israeli Shin Bet security officials at the Allenby Bridge border crossing on his way home to Gaza on June 26. He had just received the 2008 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism, which he shared with independent American journalist Dahr Jamail.
