Peace-Now-Ithaca is sponsoring a resolution which calls on the Ithaca Common Council and Tompkins County legislature to proclaim the city of Ithaca and Tompkins County to be a “Community of Sanctuary.” The resolution asks Ithaca police officers, county sheriffs and all other city and county officials [to the extent permitted by law] to protect and not interfere with the activities of military personnel and veterans who are resisting the illegal and immoral wars in and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. It further calls on the city and county governments to encourage residents to lawfully and proactively support military personnel and veterans who are organizing to stop these wars, who seek healing or who are otherwise in need as a result of the wars in and occupations of Iraq or Afghanistan, and all people who are building peaceful, democratic communities.
We are currently collecting signatures on a petition form, with a goal of 3,000 signatures to present at the city and county meetings in September. Click here for more information.
