ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a “task that is from God.” In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it “God’s will.”

Palin’s Church May Have Shaped Controversial Worldview —Huffington Post

Her speech in June provides as much insight into her policy leanings as anything uncovered since she was asked to be John McCain’s running mate…Palin’s address, much of which was spent reflecting on the work of the church in which she grew up and was baptized, underscores the notion that her world view is deeply impacted by religion. In turn, her remarks raise important questions: mainly, what is Palin’s faith and how exactly has it influenced her policies?

Perhaps most relevant concern to Canadians: David Gushee, a Christian ethicist at Mercer University in Atlanta, says he is troubled that a public official might presume that government action could be God’s intent. “I would never think it is appropriate to describe the actions of the United States military or the strategies of our commanders as a plan from God,” Gushee (left) told the Wall Street Journal.
