Ithaca Community Radio (ICR) has been granted a Construction Permit by the F.C.C. to construct a new, community-owned and operated radio station (WRFI FM) to serve communities in the vicinity of Ithaca and Watkins Glen. http://ithacaradio.org/
Contact us if you’d like to help –any help is appreciated and important! Whether you want to help with office work, programming, databases, web sites, technical aspects of radio, etc., it’s all important.
We are now assembling a group of experienced radio producers (the Finger Lakes Sound Posse) that will help teach interested people how to produce our own shows for 88.1 and 91.9. If you’re interested in producing a radio program dealing with news, issues or local arts and culture (no commercial DJ wannabees please!) drop us a line describing your program idea at our electronic mail info-at-ithacaradio-dot-org.
The new 91.9 transmitter will be located west of Walkins Glen. The signal will also be carried by ICR’s 88.1 FM translator in Ithaca. Until the new transmitter is built, ICR will continue to re-broadcast WEOS, the Hobart & William Smith Colleges station in Geneva, on ICM’s 88.1 FM translator in Ithaca. During this interim period, ICR will develop a webcast so that people interested in doing shows can learn skills while providing local coverage on the internet. This will help ensure a smooth transition to a full power broadcast radio station.
ICR could benefit from partnerships with folks at I.C. and the Independent Media Center in developing the new station. This is about opportunity and transferring skills, to give people with something to say a platform along with the skills they need to become citizen journalists, ICR needs people with developed skills to help train and empower others who don’t, This is also about building a local institution for democratic media. There is much to learn here by being part of this effort that would be transferrable to other situations and locations.
