Jafeth Ledesma Gomez, Colombian artist & cultural activist, potluck, 707 N. Cayuga, Ithaca

February 25, 2009
5:30 pmto7:30 pm

The Central New York chapter of the Colombia Support Network is excited to announce that we are hosting
Jafeth Ledesma Gomez, an artist and cultural activist from Popoyan, Colombia who creates beautiful paintings which portray the lives, culture, and political struggle of the Colombia people.

If you’ve been to any of our events, you’ve seen Jafeth’s colorful, evocative artwork on our disply table. I wish I could paste an image into this message, but it seems the best I can do is attach it.

You’re invited to meet Jafeth at any and all of the following venues during his stay in Ithaca:

Wednesday February 25
Community potluck dinner at Norma Helsper’s house
707 North Cayuga Street, Ithaca
5:30-7:30pm
Please bring a dish or beverage to share
Take the opportunity to talk to Jafeth about the rural cultural center he founded and his vision of how art can build community

Thursday February 26
“Spirituality, Art and Culture: A New Dawn in Colombia”
Big Red Barn, Cornell University
3:30-4:30pm
Jafeth will speak, show slides of his work and of course answer questions at this International Students and Scholars Coffee House event

From the Heart of Cauca: Art as Seeds of Liberation
Textor Hall, Room 103, Ithaca College
7:00-9:00pm
Jafeth will speak about the role of art in community struggles for liberation, and show slides of his work.

Ithaca Common Council member Eric Rosario will introduce Jafeth and welcome him to Ithaca. Ithaca is a “sister community” to Cajibio, a neighboring town of Popoyan. Singer/songwriter Colleen Kattau, who has visited Cauca several times, will share some songs as well.

Please call me at 272-0212 (w) or 272-2184 with any questions, and please pass this on to others interested in art, community building, the struggle for peace, and how they are all related.

Hope to see you at these events next week!

Abrazos,

Laurie
