Dr. Ismail Mehr’s presentation titled Gaza’s Dilemma will cover the medical and humanitarian struggles in Gaza as a result of the recent war & the effects of the 20 month embargo. Following the attacks in Gaza last December and Janurary, which left upwards of 1,400-1,500 Palestinians dead and many more wounded, homeless, and without water, Dr. Mehr was called upon by the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA) to be the coordinator and team leader of medical relief efforts in Gaza.
Dr. Mehr is a board certified anesthesiologist and Chairman of the Department at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell NY. He has been an active member of IMANA for the past 7 years and a member of the Humanitarian Medical Relief Committee. Previously, Dr. Mehr has done disaster relief in Indonesia following the devastating tsunami of December 2004. Also, in October 2005, he was the team leader for the first IMANA relief team and the North American Coordinator overseeing relief efforts in northern Pakistan after it was rocked by an earthquake.
