Human society is rapidly approaching–and may have already passed–hugely significant ecological limits. Environmental concerns are beginning to take center-stage in public dialogue. Still, the people who set policy for our economy, media, and government have not halted man-made environmental destruction. The solutions being proposed by the people in power are not enough to establish environmental justice or avoid environmental catastrophe.
However, we have entered a new era of hope and expectation for positive change, ranging from ending the wars in the Middle East to creating Green Jobs. The Obama Administration’s steps towards creating green jobs and technology can open the door to building a mass movement against the industries and policies that cause global warming.
In trying to build an environmental movement, we have to ask strategic questions: “Can we stop global warming within the framework of capitalism?” That is, can we address the problem of Global Warming without addressing the profit-driven, unplanned, militaristic, nationalistic, racist, and sexist nature of the class-based capitalist system? This study group will present the case that global warming is not just caused by over-population, individual consumption patterns, or economic growth per se. To save the environment, we must look at the whole structure of society – who owns the wealth, who controls it, who is oppressed, and who is fighting for liberation.
