Gratitude Rally For Rep Hinchey

ITHACA, NEW YORK—–If you like celebrations with giant street puppets and balloons you will want to come down to the corner of Green St and Cayuga St beneath Representative Hinchey’s Ithaca office at 4:30 today. The event is a big thank you rally to acknowledge Representative Hinchey’s decision to co-sponsor House Resolution 1258 to impeach George Bush.

Representative Hinchey signed on as co-sponsor on June 18, 2008 to the House bill bringing 35 articles of impeachment against George Bush. This resolution, sponsored by Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich, has had had a recent surge of support by other Congressional members. Reps Tammy Baldwin, Robert Wexler, Sam Farr, Barbara Lee and Lynn Woosley join District 22 Congressman Maurice Hinchey as recent co-sponsors of this resolution seeking impeachment of George Bush on charges of high crimes and misdemeanors.

Peace Now Ithaca, is the primary group initiating the “Thank You Rep Hinchey” rally. “We see this as an opportunity to celebrate our Congressman’s steps to represent the will of so many of the area citizens. At many rallies in and around Ithaca over the past few years the cries for the impeachment of Bush could be heard loud and clear,” explained a spokesperson for Peace Now Ithaca. In addition, the city of Ithaca and Tompkins County have also supported local resolutions to impeach Mr. Bush. These decisions were in part fueled by the many thousands of signatures demanding impeachment actions which were delivered to city and County officials last year from citizens within Ithaca and Tompkins County.

On June 11th a motion to refer this Congressional impeachment resolution to committee was agreed to by a vote of 251 yeas and 166 nays.

“Our voices are finally being heard”, contends a member of District 22 For Impeachment, another organization participating in today’s rally. “If we do not indict George Bush aren’t we all complicit in the crimes many US citizens and millions of people around the world believe Bush has committed?” Maurice Hinchey is showing an act of courage and we respect that deeply”, the spokesperson continued. Other groups supporting this thank you rally include Finger Lakes For Peace and Ithaca Puppetistas. Thus a total of four local action groups are coming together to express their appreciation to Congressman Maurice Hinchey for his recent stand on this issue. Everyone is invited to attend.
